Thunder

She paced in the living room, constantly glancing at the clock every five minutes or so. It was pouring outside, and he was late. He’s never late. She couldn’t help but worry about him, considering the harsh conditions outside.

For what seemed like the hundredth time that night, she jumped at the sound of the booming thunder rolling through the house. She pulled her pink terry cloth robe tighter around her body as she walked to the window. With the water cascading down the window, she managed to vaguely see headlights coming up the driveway.

She rushed to the front door and swung it open, expecting him to be running towards her, trying not to get soaked by the rain, but instead, he slowly got out of his car, grinning like an idiot. He closed the car door and tossed the keys in the air, and caught them, slowly walking up the driveway as if it were the nicest day of the year.

Finally, he made it up the front steps, and practically knocked her over as he ploughed through the front door, without as much as a ‘hello’ or a ‘how are you’.

“Thank God you’re home! I was so worried about you!” she said as she walked towards him trying to help him take his jacket off, “Where were you?” she asked softly.

“I was out OK!” he snapped.

“I-I-I was just worried, is all. I mean, there’s so much thunder and rain outside, and it was getting late, so I started thinking that maybe something bad happened…”

“You don’t have to fucking worry alright?! God! I just don’t understand why you’re so fucking clingy! For God sakes! I don’t know why I even bother!” He ripped his jacket off, and threw it on a nearby chair, and was about to walk into the kitchen, when she grabbed his arm.

“Look Jackie, I’m not in the mood for this again, I just wanna get something to drink, alright?” he tried to shrug his arm away from her grip, but she dug her nails deeper into the flesh on his arm.

She gritted her teeth, “I know you’re fucking around Justin, so don’t fuck with me. I asked you where you were, and I want a damn answer.”

Justin looked shocked, “you think I’m cheating on you?! Is THAT what this is all about?! Jackie, that’s fucking unbelievable. I can’t believe you would even think that!”

“Then where were you?!”

“I—I was with Trace. There, are you happy now? So if you don’t mind, I’d like to get a drink of water or something.” He pried her fingers from his arm, and slid into the kitchen to grab a bottle of Evian.

When he turned to face Jackie, he saw that she was going through his jacket pockets. “Jackie! What are you doing?!”

“Oh! Am I not supposed to be going through the contents of your jacket?” she asked innocently.

“Jackie, just put the jacket down, there’s no reason for you to look through there…”

“No reason huh? Well, Justin, I do think there’s a reason. It being this.” She pulled out a piece of paper with a phone number scribbled onto it. “Who’s Krista? Who the fuck is Krista?”

“She’s a friend.” He answered, refusing to look her in the eye.

“For the only moment in your life Justin, just tell me the god damn truth.” She yelled.

“She’s JUST A FRIEND!” he yelled back, emphasizing the word ‘friend’.

Jackie stepped up to him and pushed him back towards the kitchen island. “YOU”RE LYING AGAIN!” she yelled again, but this time, her yelling was joined by her tears running down her cheeks.

“Jackie, you’re REALLY pushing it…”

She shoved him again “Why can’t you fucking answer me?!”.

“I don’t need this bullshit.” Justin grabbed his jacket from her grasp and pushed past her as he walked out the door.

Jackie stumbled backwards from the contact and fell against the wall. She slid down the wall and hugged her knees to her chest. She heard the front door slam as lightning struck and loud thunder rolled through the house. Once again, it was quiet. Just like the thunder, Justin was gone, and there was silence. -------

That’s right BITCH…he was with ME.
